BASE HIT, ROUND FIRST

Upon hitting the ball on the ground, and through the infield, or a line drive that hits the ground, the runner hits the corner of the bag, rounds first and looks for the ball. The coach should be telling him to 'TAKE A LOOK!', with his arm at about 7 o'clock.

  • On your quick peek you see the ball is through the infield.
  • About half way toward first base, begin your banana turn.

  • Hit the inside corner of the bag with your inside foot (left). Find the ball.

  • Do not go too far away from the bag. A couple of feet is all that you really need to be, in case you have to dive back.

  • Don't come to an abrupt stop. Find the ball, and let the ball force you back, or until you hear the ump call 'time'. Try to stay moving towards second base.

  • If you stop, and immediatly move back to first base, the umpire can and will call time, and that takes away your chances to advance to second.

If he sees an overthrow, he runs to second. If he is forced back, he quickly gets back to first. He also listens for 'BACK! BACK!' or 'GO! GO!'.

  • Make the ball stop you. Follow the ball all the way back to the bag.
  • We're thinking "two out of the box." Doubles are made between home and first not between first and second.
